Over the past few years, FSMOne.com has consistently been running an annual investment event: FSM Invest EXPO. Although Covid-19 has affected our way of life, FSMOne.com was not going to allow it to dampen the mood and halt the streak. In 2021, they will continue to host the event. This time it’ll be held virtually and will be called: What and Where to Invest.

This is timely as investors would be able to seek guidance on how to better approach the markets in the new year after a turbulent 2020.

The event will be conducted over 6 sessions spanning the month of Jan. It is free for anyone to attend. You can register here.

The theme of the event is pretty interesting – it revolves around the concept of building your own investment survival kit. Survive first so you can prosper subsequently!

Day 1 – Looking back and looking forward (9 Jan, Sat 10 am – 4 pm)

Day 1 of the event is symbolized by the Torchlight and Compass.

The speakers will review and shed light on lessons learnt in 2020. After knowing where we are, we need to know where we’re heading. The speakers would give you some direction on where to focus your investments in 2021.

Readers of Dr Wealth blog should know that I am bullish about China. I would be keen to listen to what Will Shum (Director, Research and Portfolio Management, iFAST Hong Kong) has to share about China in his section on “Key reasons to look at China in 2021.

The panel discussion on “What’s next for Singapore?” looks interesting too. Being a true blue Singaporean, I care about Singapore’s overall economic outlook because it would impact the people around me and myself. Moreover, I see Terence Wong (CEO and Executive Director, Azure Capital) as one of the panellists and I look forward to his insights.

There are more topics to be covered on Day 1 which include digital economy and disruptive technologies. These have been hot investments in 2020. Check out the full programme here.

Day 2 – Building your investment survival kit (12 Jan, Tue 7 pm – 9 pm)

The symbol for Day 2 is the First Aid Kit. Some investors’ portfolio might have suffered in 2020. There is no time for regret and most importantly investors should learn from it, make corrective changes and look forward.

We are not out of the woods yet as some countries have witnessed a resurgence in Covid-19 cases and new strains of coronavirus have emerged even before mass vaccination. “Can your portfolio survive another pandemic?” and “Preparing for the next black swan event” are apt topics, just in case another round of pandemic strike again.

Day 3 – Strategy playbook for 2021 (14 Jan, Tue 7 pm – 9 pm)

The symbols for Day 3 are Map and Swiss Army Knife. It is about having the experts and professionals to help you navigate the investment universe and to cut through the noise and seize opportunities.

Are you torn between dividends stocks and growth stocks? Our good friend, Rusmin (co-founder of Fifth Person), will help you decide better with his talk – “Go for Growth or Dive in on Dividends in 2021?”.

REITs are another firm favourite among investors. I bet many readers have REITs in their portfolios so the topic “RIP or Rage on? Is 2021 the year for REITs to shine?” would be of concern to you.

If you are not so much into individual stocks and want a piece of the action in technology, You Weiren, CFA (Manager, Stocks & ETFs Research, iFAST Singapore) will take you through “Investing in the future of technology? Here are 3 ETFs you should know about.”

Day 4 – What, where (and when) to invest in 2021 (19 Jan, Tue 7 pm – 9 pm)

Day 4’s symbol is the Battery – you need to be efficient with your financial resources and deploy them well to meet your financial goals.

Some investors think that buy and hold means you don’t need to monitor the portfolio. That’s not true! Even if you run a portfolio built on funds, you’ll need to rebalance to capture the gains, or even capture arising opportunities by buying declining assets at a cheaper price. Attend “Imbalanced portfolio after an atypical 2020? Here’s how you can strike a “rebalance”!” to find out how to do it.

But not all investors believe in a buy and hold strategy . There is a group of investors who want to identify the right points of the market cycle to buy and sell their stocks. If that’s you, don’t miss out the topic “Cyclic Investing Strategy with COVID-19 Stock Crisis Recovery Rally in Singapore and US”.

I believe that investment loss is part and parcel of investing as the markets may fall from time to time. The topic “Can you keep your portfolio green at any time?” challenged my belief and has caught my attention. I would be curious to know how to achieve that and this topic definitely piqued my curiosity.

Day 5 – Age 21, 31, 41, or 51? It’s never too late to start investing! (19 Jan, Tue 7 pm – 9 pm)

Day 5’s symbol is the Rope. Why? Because it is about encouraging beginners to start investing. FSMOne wants to show them the rope. This is also to commemorate its 21st anniversary – welcome to adulthood!

I am happy to see our blogging friends, Timothy (co-founder of Dollars and Sense) and Dawn (SG Budget Babe) in the line up. They’ll be sharing about “Welcome to the jungle of investing – How to pack your survival kit?” and “A coming-of-age: Deciding on your first portfolio as a beginner” respectively in this session. They are great at making complex concepts simple to understand, so be sure to attend.

Day 6 will be held on 26 Jan (Tue), 7pm to 9pm. It is a special session for the Chinese crowd. Check out the programme here if you are keen.
