Hang Seng Tech Index – Tracking The Rise Of Tech Stocks In The East

Growth Investing, Stocks

Hong Kong’s financial markets were not anything like the protests on the streets. In fact, they have been thriving – Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing share price has been up by 45% this year. Few days ago, Hang Seng Indexes Company (a subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank) introduced the Hang Seng Tech Index to track the technology stocks listed in Hong Kong.

This seems like a timely move as Chinese companies feared they may be forced to delist from US exchanges. Alibaba, JD and NetEase have secondary listings on Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK) to hedge against this possibility. Hang Seng Tech Index is a new home to Chinese tech companies and has the potential be a NASDAQ equivalent in the east. This is a testament of tech’s increasing clout and a further proof of a digital iron curtain between US and China.

Hang Seng Tech Index is made up of 30 stocks that were chosen from 163 tech companies listed in SEHK. The backtesting showed that the Index would have generated 36% return in 2019 and 45.5% in 2020 year-to-date, easily outperformed the rivalling NASDAQ Composite for the same period.

China is no longer a mere copycat of the US and have her own achievements in pushing the frontiers of technology. Hang Seng Tech Index is a way to prove the technological prowess in the east and a force to be reckoned with.

  1. Hi Alvin,

Great article and run-down of each constituent of the index. Will there be ETF(s) tracking this index?

    Thank you.

  2. Hi Alvin,

Thanks for the post! It’s good that not only me is blogging about Tech stocks here in Sg blogosphere to give awareness especially also in HKSE and not just NYSE. Otherwise SG as a stock market, is real too small, although our stocks here are stable in nature comparatively.

In fact, just one Ant Financial IPO can cover a large percentage of SG entire stock exchange companies.

  3. Alvin hello
I came across your article in preparation of a theme focused on HK tech shares available on U.S. OTC
The theme “Hang Seng Tech – OTC listed constituents”has been edited on my pininvest.com platform – there are of course some limitations because of poor liquidity on OTC of some stocks – I also include some tech-focused ETFs
This approach might be useful for some U.S. based investor and I would be pleased to have your (constructive) criticism …! Best regards, Wouter van Wijk

  4. The CSOP Hang Seng TECH ETF (3033) has started trading on HKEX since 28 Aug 2020 with an expense ratio of 0.99% which looks kind of high to me. I have not traded ETF before so maybe someone could share his/her view?
