16 Businesses That You Patronise But Probably Wouldn’t Know They Are Listed On SGX

Investments, Stocks

You may have patronised these businesses before. Some may even be your favourite hunt.

I have excluded the famous, obvious and familiar brands. Examples are the telcos, local banks, SMRT, ComfortDelgro, OSIM, BreadTalk, Eu Yan Sang, Challenger, Courts etc. I have also excluded the hotels, malls and properties.

ABR (SGX code : 533)

You would have remembered your first big bowl of ice-cream called “Earthquake” from Swensen’s. Well, the company behind Swensen’s Singapore is ABR.

At times, you want your caffeine fix but pretty sick of Starbucks. You may have ended up at Gloria Jean’s Coffee to enjoy your cuppa of coffee. Well, the people behind ABR made it happened!

Or you wanted curry puffs and wandered into Tip Top. Yes, it is ABR again.

ABR also have other F&B like Oishi Pizza, Earle Swensen’s and Hippopotamus restuarants in Singapore.

Japan Foods (SGX : 5OI)

I love those pork broth ramen. Ajisen and Menya Musashi ramen are passable and tasty enough. Don’t set your standards so high! I didn’t enjoy the food in Osaka Ohsho though.

The rest of the brands I have yet to try. I do notice a couple of Fruit Paradise outlets and their cakes look ever so refreshing.

Neo Group (SGX : 5UJ)

Besides the various catering brands, Umisushi retail eateries are by Neo Group too! At the time of writing they have 25 outlets; expanding fast!

Select Group (SGX : 5FQ)

Select is another famous caterer. The company also has a suite of restaurants which I have patronised before – Lerk Thai, Texas Chicken, Sheng Kee Dessert and Chinatown Food Street.

Hotel Properties (SGX : H15)

There was a reservation queue when Jamie’s Italian restaurant was first opened at Vivo City. The Hard Rock Cafe outlets in Singapore are also owned by Hotel Properties.

QAF (SGX : Q01)

I don’t know about you. Gardenia comes to my mind if you mention about bread. I grew up with the blue and red wrapper that looks like an American flag. It brings back happy memories. QAF owns the Gardenia brand and operations, among many other brands which they import to Singapore.

Gardenia White Bread

Auric Pacific (SGX : A23)

Another well known bread in Singapore is Sunshine, which is owned by Auric Pacific. How about the legendary SCS butter that you grew up with? The rich, milky and fragrant butter is irresistible!

Auric also owns the Delifrance outlets in Singapore and acquired Food Junction in 2013.

I didn’t know Chef Wan’s buffet restaurant at Plaza Singapura was also under Auric’s umbrella of eateries.

Auric Pacific Brands

Aspial (SGX : A30)

Lee Hwa Jewellery, Goldheart and Citigems are commonplace in shopping malls. They all belong to Aspial. I wouldn’t be able to tell the brand positioning amongst them. Maybe ladies would know better since diamonds are their best friends.

The pawn shop, Maxi-Cash, is also part of Aspial.

Aspial Brands

Dairy Farm (SGX : D01)

I believe most people would know that Giant and Cold Storage are part of Dairy Farm. Few would know that Guardian and 7-Eleven stores in Singapore is franchised by Dairy Farm. However, GNC and Ikea stores in Singapore are not operated by Dairy Farm.

Eastern Holdings (SGX : 5KU)

It appears to me Motherhood magazines are popular among Singapore moms. Eastern Holdings is the publisher of this magazine and the organiser of the Motherhood exhibitions. Eastern also produces Golf and other trade magazines. The company is also a property developer and operates a storage service under the Selfstore brand.

GP Batteries (SGX : G08)

I know you may prefer the branded batteries like Energizer and Duracell. You may also associate GP batteries with the cheap skate batteries.

But they are really not that bad. Quite durable and affordable! And I also bet most people do not know they are listed on SGX!

GP Batteries

Haw Par (SGX : H02)

The famous old school Tiger Balm brand of ointment products are owned by Haw Par.

Likewise for the Underwater World Sentosa.

Penguin (SGX : P13)

National Servicemen would never forget this scene, and the smell of sea water at the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Recruits would need this fast craft to travel to and fro Pulau Tekong. These fast crafts are owned and operated by listed Penguin.

TT International (SGX : T09)

Most Singaporeans should remember Akira TVs and electronic devices even though they would not end up in most homes here. I remembered watching a documentary a long time ago where the brand is doing reasonably well in Mongolia.

While researching about TT International, I was surprised that the company operates furniture stores like ModLiving, Natural Living, Novena and Barang Barang!

F J Benjamin (SGX : F10)

FJ Benjamin distributes many fashion brands and time pieces in Singapore.

They also have lifestyle brands like Sheridan (bedsheets) and St James Power Station (club).

  1. Since you have many food related companies, here are three of my favourite: Sakae, Tung Lok, & Soup Restaurant. All separately listed on SGX.

  2. Interesting that most of the brand-names mentioned above are food-related 😛
Anyway, Q&M Dental, Popular Holdings, Isetan and Metro are also familiar businesses which are listed in Singapore.

  3. Thanks for the comments!

I have excluded BreadTalk, Super Group, Sakae, Q&M, etc are because most people are familiar with them. And these brands are listed with the same name. There are less surprises 🙂

  4. Dear Alvin,

I just read your article on “16 Businesses That You Patronise But Probably Wouldn’t Know They Are Listed On SGX” and found the article really interesting. I saw the article going around couple of my friends and it seems like they are enjoying it as well.

Actually, I hope to have to chance to meet you and know you in person. I wonder do I have the luxury of doing so? I am a undergraduate in SMU and would like to hear from someone like you.

    From,
    Wilson
